In a suction dispensing system, the pump is located in the underground containment (UDC) or indeed, often referred to as a submersible pump system. This placement allows the pump to efficiently draw fuel from the underground storage tank (UST) and deliver it to the dispenser through a suction line. The design of the system utilizes atmospheric pressure to push the fuel from the UST, ensuring that the pump does not have to work against the weight of the fuel column, thus facilitating a safer and more effective dispensing process.

The pump's location at the UDC is also significant for maintenance and safety reasons, as it minimizes the risk of fuel spills. In contrast, having the pump located inside the UST or at the fill port would not allow for effective suction. Additionally, placing the pump underground near the dispenser could compromise safety and operational efficiency by exposing equipment to environmental factors.
